AI Agents Are Starting to Make Payments. What Does That Mean for Odoo?
Jaime Cangas

AI is changing how businesses buy and pay for things. Here's what Odoo merchants should know, what they can do today, and what can wait.

Imagine a customer asking an AI assistant to find a replacement part, compare prices, place an order, and pay.

No browsing through websites. No filling out checkout forms: just a request, an approved purchase, and a completed payment.

We're not quite there yet, but we're getting closer.

In October, Visa announced a pilot with BILL and Billtrust that allows authorized AI agents to complete previously approved business invoice payments. Sierra and Stripe introduced a way for AI customer service agents to collect payments during phone calls. Walmart is also developing tools that will let customers authorize AI agents to shop on their behalf.

These are different applications of AI, and they're at different stages of development. However, they point toward a change in how payments may work.

Software is starting to do more than help people find things. It's beginning to help them pay for them.

So, if your business runs on Odoo, should you be doing something about this?

The short answer is yes, but probably not what you think.

First, Look at How You're Taking Payments Today

Before worrying about AI agents, review your current payment process.

Does someone on your team still take credit card payments over the phone? Do customers have to call your office to settle an invoice? Does accounting spend time matching transactions from your payment processor to records in Odoo?

These are common situations, especially for manufacturers, distributors, and service businesses that handle a mix of invoices, online orders, and direct customer payments.

They also create unnecessary work.

Consider the customer who calls to pay an invoice. An employee takes the card number, processes the payment, and updates the invoice.

It works, but there's a better way to handle it.

Odoo supports online invoice payments through configured payment providers. Instead of collecting card information over the phone, you can send the customer an invoice with a secure payment option.

The customer enters their payment information, and Odoo can register the payment against the invoice. Depending on the configuration, bank reconciliation may still be required to complete the accounting process. For many businesses, improving an employee-heavy process like this delivers more immediate value than adopting an AI payment assistant.

Make Your Odoo Product Information Easier to Use

If you sell through an Odoo webshop, product information is another area worth reviewing.

AI shopping assistants need reliable information to help customers find and compare products.

Imagine a purchasing manager asking an assistant to find a specific industrial component that's in stock, meets certain specifications, and can ship within three business days.

The assistant needs accurate product descriptions, pricing, availability, and shipping information to make a useful recommendation.

If that information is missing or outdated, your product becomes harder to evaluate.

Of course, clean product data alone doesn't mean an AI agent can access your store. That also depends on how the agent connects to websites, catalogs, and checkout systems.

But keeping your Odoo product catalog accurate is a sensible starting point.

Review your product names, descriptions, specifications, prices, and inventory levels. Make sure the information is useful to someone who doesn't already know your products.

It's good e-commerce practice today and may become even more valuable as AI-assisted shopping develops.

Security Still Matters

One challenge with AI-driven payments is figuring out whether an automated purchase is legitimate.

For years, merchants have used fraud detection tools to identify suspicious automated activity. Now the payment industry is working on ways to distinguish unauthorized bots from AI agents acting with a customer's permission.

Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol and Mastercard's Agent Pay initiative are part of that effort.

These developments could make it easier for payment providers and merchants to recognize authorized AI transactions. But support isn't universal, and the technology is still evolving.

For now, the practical advice is straightforward.

Keep your existing fraud controls in place. Understand how your payment provider handles transaction security. And ask how it's preparing for AI-initiated payments.

There's no need to overhaul your security setup just because AI commerce is making headlines.

Should You Change Payment Processors to Prepare for AI?

Not necessarily.

It's easy to see an announcement from a company like Stripe and wonder whether your current payment provider is falling behind.

But a new feature doesn't automatically matter to your business.

If you process hundreds of phone payments every day, an AI assistant that can securely collect payments might eventually be worth exploring.

If your business handles a dozen phone payments a week, a secure invoice payment link may be all you need.

The same goes for AI shopping agents.

Before investing in a new checkout system, it makes sense to understand whether your customers are actually using these tools and whether your existing setup can support them when the time comes.

Technology investments should solve business problems.

And sometimes the best decision is to leave a process alone because it's already working well.

Where Bluemax Pay Fits In

At Bluemax Pay, we help businesses accept and manage payments directly within Odoo.

Our approach is built around a fairly simple idea: payment processing shouldn't create more work for the people using the ERP system.

Bluemax Pay supports credit & debit cards, ACH, card present/not present, payment links, and other payment options through our partnership with Adyen. Our integration connects payment activity with Odoo to simplify transaction management and reconciliation.

That matters whether you're collecting payments through an online store, handling customer invoices, or accepting in-person transactions.

And while we're watching developments in AI-driven commerce closely, we're not suggesting that every Odoo business needs an AI payment solution.

The more immediate opportunity for many merchants is to reduce manual work and make better use of the systems they already have.

If your payment processing is disconnected from Odoo, or your accounting team is spending too much time reconciling transactions, that's worth addressing regardless of what happens with AI.

Three Things Worth Doing Now

If you're wondering where to start, I'd focus on three things.

1. Review your payment workflow -  Look at how customers pay, how transactions get recorded, and where employees still have to enter information manually.

2. Check your product and customer data -  Accurate pricing, inventory, customer records, and invoice details make everyday operations easier and provide a stronger foundation for future automation.

3. Talk with your payment provider - Ask about security, reconciliation, and how the provider is approaching AI-initiated transactions. You don't need a technical deep dive. Just understand what's available today and what's being developed.

You may find that everything is working fine.

Or you may uncover a few improvements that could save your team time without adding another piece of software.

How can Bluemax Pay Help?

AI agents are beginning to change how purchases and payments happen. The technology is interesting, and there's good reason to follow its progress.

At Bluemax Pay, we're happy to help Odoo merchants take a closer look at their current payment setup and determine whether an embedded payment solution would make a meaningful difference.
